Mission or Goal of Unit: The Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology has an extensive teaching mission in both professional and graduate education, participating in over 36 course offerings addressing gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy/neuroscience. These programs are offered in the schools of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as in the Dental Hygiene and Graduate Studies programs, serving the needs of a large number of graduate and professional students. In addition to its substantial commitment to the teaching mission of the school and university, the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology also has an extensive research program in the areas of glial cell biology, CNS injury and repair, and neuroplasticity and behavior. The departmental faculty involved in these research activities also participate in the training of multiple MD/PhD and postdoctoral fellows.

Chief Purpose of this Position: We invite candidates to apply for this exciting opportunity. The incumbent will augment the department's extensive teaching mission. The recruit will increase the faculty available for traditional teaching in the anatomical sciences as well as the development and delivery of alternative learning approaches in the schools of Medicine and Dentistry. It is anticipated that the recruit will be a thought leader in all of the anatomical sciences and thereby further support the faculty currently involved in professional and graduate school teaching.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching

The incumbent will primarily be charged for the purpose of supporting the teaching activities of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. These teaching activities will include, but not be limited to, participation in lectures and laboratory sessions offered in the department's programs in professional and graduate education involving gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and the neurosciences, the majority of which are team taught. In addition to participating in multiple course offerings, it is anticipated that the recruit will also provide leadership and service in these respective courses by serving as either course director and/or a senior faculty member in 1 or 2 of the above-identified programs. The candidate's involvement in teaching will also mandate their participation in exam preparation and student evaluation, while also assisting in curricular design as individual courses undergo modifications in response to the specific needs of the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Graduate Education.

Service

Service will be limited but it will be related to the candidate's extensive teaching efforts. In this vein, it is most likely that the candidate will provide limited committee service to the schools of Medicine and Dentistry and their specific committees focused on curricular development and refinement.

Required Qualifications:
  • MD and/or PhD degrees with a strong background in all of the anatomical sciences and their presentation in both the medical and dental settings
  • An extensive track record in teaching and course direction in both the professional and graduate settings
  • Leadership in pedagogy with the preparation of texts, chapters, and/or self-learning packages focusing on varied aspects of the anatomical sciences
