Physical Requirements
Standing for long periods of time. Lift or push core boxes up to 75 lbs. safely with assistance, if needed. Independently navigate facility and grounds. Safe operation of materials handling equipment as directed. Ability to operate rock saw, pallet jack (training provided).
Shift
Working hours Between Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
37.5 hours per week.
Job Summary
The Kentucky Geological Survey is seeking a safety-conscious and self-motivated employee to contribute to a grant-funded project describing and analyzing geologic core samples. The position will last six months, and is eligible for healthcare benefits.
What you'll do:
EARL is a rock, mineral and soil analysis and storage facility located off UK's campus. Your primary place of work is an analysis lab inside of EARL, adjacent to the storage facility.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Attention to detail, organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, teamwork, must have legible handwriting, core description of rock cores
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?
No
Preferred Education/Experience
Bachelor's in Science or Bachelor's in Earth Science, Materials Handling Equipment Experience: manual pallet jack, rock saw, tile saw or similar experience. Warehouse experience and familiarity with geologic nomenclature.

What you'll do:
- Preserve, document and describe rock cores for research purposes pertaining to critical mineral projects
- Pull rock cores from the storage facility to be analyzed
- Compose descriptions using correct geologic nomenclature
- Re-house rock cores in the storage facility using a pallet jack
- Prepare samples for analysis with a rock saw
- Perform quality assurance and quality control checks to ensure data accuracy and discoverability
- Write notes by hand and enter data into the KGS Database
- You have high attention to detail and can spot minute differences between data
- You've got a geology or earth science background
- You care about findability and preservation of research data
- Your written and verbal communication skills are clear (including handwriting)
- You enjoy working on a small team
- You have (or desire) training with pallet jacks, rock saws or tile saws
