Physical Requirements
Standing for long periods of time. Lift or push core boxes up to 75 lbs. safely with assistance, if needed. Independently navigate facility and grounds. Safe operation of materials handling equipment as directed. Ability to operate rock saw, pallet jack (training provided).
Shift
Working hours Between Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
37.5 hours per week.
Job Summary
The Kentucky Geological Survey is seeking a safety-conscious and self-motivated employee to contribute to a grant-funded project preserving rock cores for use in research. The position will last until Nov 30, 2024, and is eligible for healthcare benefits.
What you'll do:
EARL is a rock, mineral and soil analysis and storage facility located off UK's campus. Your primary place of work is an analysis lab inside of EARL, adjacent to the storage facility.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Attention to detail, organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, teamwork, must have legible handwriting
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?
No
Preferred Education/Experience
Associates in Science or Associates in Earth Science, Materials Handling Equipment Experience: manual pallet jack. Warehouse Experience. Familiarity with geologic nomenclature.

What you'll do:
- Use a pallet jack to maneuver rock cores through the storage facility for analysis
- Preserve and document rock cores for research
- Identify, label and re-house rock cores with a team
- Use a rock hammer and rock saw to resize core pieces for storage
- Write or transcribe notes by hand and/or in a database
- Compose and maintain project notes for analysis
- Follow best practices for preservation and storage of geologic samples
- You have high attention to detail and can spot minute differences between data
- You've got a geology or earth science background
- You care about findability and preservation of research data
- Your written and verbal communication skills are clear (including handwriting)
- You enjoy working on a small team
- You have (or desire) training with pallet jacks, rock saws or tile saws
- You are familiar with rock cores and desire to learn more about core description
