Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

JOB SUMMARY

The Infrastructure and Operations Engineer plays an essential role in the delivery of system level IT services to Jack Baskin School of Engineering affiliates in support of instruction, research, and administration. Joining a team of Baskin Engineering IT professionals, this position provides independent, high level administration in the design, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, and frontline client support of administering research computer and administrative server infrastructure. A successful candidate is competent in the following: applying expert level systems infrastructure concepts and institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues, supporting enterprise level systems administration in the areas of networking, storage, software compiling, testing and installing, and breadth of abilities aligned with the Linux OS. Applied understanding of engineering research methods is essential. Due to the nature of this role, the incumbent will be required to regularly work on campus with the potential for remote work opportunities.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $101,100 - $123,900/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

35% - Operational Support
  • Serves Baskin Engineering clients utilizing server infrastructure unique to the administrative and research needs of a School of Engineering, providing advanced customer service to: employees, graduate and undergraduate students, alumni, and guests; primarily in support of research and instruction.
  • Responds to day-to-day requests relating to use of research compute and infrastructure servers: general administration, client access, network security, problem resolution in the everyday operational flow.
  • Daily monitoring of server hardware, software, utilities, users, and groups to proactively minimize the disruption to administration, research, and instructional IT related services.
  • Utilizes a ticket tracking system to prioritize and respond to incident and service requests.

35% - Instrastucture Administration
  • Configures, manages, and supports large, highly complex, and highly integrated server/client environments. Provides direct support to clients of these servers.
  • Plans and directs key activities in software release management processes.
  • Specifies, writes, and executes elaborate scripts in support of server management, log analysis, security requirements, and other server administration duties.
  • Works independently and collaboratively with a team of Infrastructure and Operations Engineers to develop and standardize server administrative functions.
  • Initiates, designs, or modifies highly complex systems, processes and procedures where standardized policies or procedures may not exist.

15% - System Design and Analysis
  • Collaboratively provides a foundation of compute server management and associated processes and procedures.
  • Creates technical specifications for servers with broad impact at a divisional level.
  • Performs highly complex analysis of unit and user needs, documentation of requirements, and translation into proper server and process requirement specifications.
  • Researches, recommends, and designs the adoption and deployment of transitions to new technology, both hardware and software specific.
  • Develops creative solutions to respond to new research compute needs, responding to both short and long term needs.

15% - Additional Duties
  • Understands and applies industry practices, community standards, and department/unit policies and procedures in depth. Documents and inventories all processes, procedures, hardware, software, programmatic services, and tasks.
  • May serve as technical lead for projects of moderate to broad scope.
  • Interprets and adopts Information Technology Services, UCSC campus, UC Office of the President, and/or regulation-based security policies to control access to networked resources.
  • Works with other ITS units on the development and delivery of shared IT services.
  • Works on ITS and campus committees and projects as requested, including new and improved services that support research and instructional needs, and central for the campus at large.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of various areas of IT. Broad knowledge of the IT environment.
  • Advanced skills associated with server level design, architecture, implementation, and maintenance. Linux CLI, shell scripting, software firewalls, network configurations, and software compiling and installation.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with server problem identification and resolution. Experience necessary to design, configure, operate, repair, and correct malfunctions involving servers and clients. Preferred Linux OS experience: e.g. FreeBSD, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.
  • Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform server maintenance and administration: e.g. bash, tcsh, perl, php, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices, and policies including demonstrated experience securing server based hardware and software.
  • Advanced knowledge of server performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Broad knowledge of storage that includes JBOD and RAID levels and ZFS with SAS, SATA, iSCSI, NAS, etc. and understanding of how NFS functions.
  • Technical skill and depth to develop and implement backup and recovery functions.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how server management actions affect other server, users, and dependent / related functions. Experience in data integration and the specification of data services.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of remote server maintenance and configuration management tools: e.g. SaltStack, Puppet, CFengine, Chef, Ansible, etc.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of remote server monitoring tools: e.g. Nagios, Cacti, Prometheus, Grafana, etc.
  • Knowledge of DHCP/DNS services and managing DNS domain information: hostnames, CNAMES, etc.
  • Knowledge of remote desktop access software: e.g. X2GO, XRDP, Apple Remote Desktop, and Microsoft Remote Desktop, etc.
  • Experience using and administering Bacula.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Agile Certification.
  • Lean / Six Sigma Certification.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs.
