Job Description
Old Dominion University seeks a communications professional to find, research, and write stories, multimedia features, social media posts, and web content in alignment with the university's brand. The Senior Marketing Copywriter and Content Strategist will collaborate with appropriate staff — such as graphic designers and photographers — to write, edit, and prepare for production a variety of university communications primarily directed toward external audiences. The incumbent will collaborate with project managers, other content creators, designers, photographers, web staff, and other appropriate staff to produce content in support of elevating the university's brand, supporting its revenue generation goals, and influencing and engaging both internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the difference between writing for print publications, advertising, and websites, embracing university brand standards and guiding tone of voice.

Considerable knowledge of journalism, communications, marketing and/or technical writing.
Considerable knowledge of the principals/methods for enhancing public relations, generating positive publicity, and generally informing others by investigating, researching and writing compelling/persuasive content for a variety of communication mediums. Considerable knowledge of grammar and punctuation usage and some familiarity with APA style. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Keen attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Considerable professional writing experience in a variety of styles and formats. Some experience working with a style guide such as AP Style or others. Some experience writing for a variety of media, including print, web, social media and/or video.

Considerable professional experience writing for various media, such as print, web, social and video. Considerable knowledge of AP Style. Some experience working within brand guidelines.

Considerable customer service skills, including diplomatically, patiently, and successfully handling complaints, problems, questions, conflict, and suggestions. Some experience with a website content management system. Some knowledge of development and design tools (including HTML), SEO, cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility, basic understanding of website analytics and measuring ROI; solid understanding of online copywriting and how it impacts search engine optimization. Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Business Administration or another related field.
