Position Purpose

The mission of the Office of Pluralism and Leadership ( OPAL) is to foster a Dartmouth where all students can thrive, value difference, and contribute to the creation of a socially just world. OPAL provides academic and sociocultural advising, designs and facilitates educational programs, and serves as advocates for all students and communities.

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Pluralism and Leadership and general supervision of the Sr. Assistant Dean and Director of Pluralism and Leadership, the Program Coordinator for Community and Leadership Development will provide program and leadership focus for one of the affinity communities under the umbrella of OPAL such as: International Student Advising, Women and Gender Advising, Latinx/Caribbean Student Advising, Black & Pan African Student Advising, Pan Asian Student Advising, and LGBTQIA+ Student Advising. As a critical member of the OPAL staff, the Program Coordinators are responsible for co-advising student leaders, planning and oversight of the implementation of signature programs, providing opportunities for student leadership development, coordinating outreach, and facilitating educational training. Many programs run during evenings and weekends; work schedules will be arranged to accommodate irregular hours.

  • Two years' relevant work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational skills for proficiently managing multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for engaging students, faculty, and colleagues.
  • Ability to interact with others with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to respond appropriately to pressures, deadlines and frequent changes in priorities and schedules.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to take initiative, work independently, and handle multiple issues and competing priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Adept at working with a highly diverse community.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education and experience in student affairs, multicultural and social justice education, gender and sexuality studies, ethnic studies, international education, and/or leadership development.
  • Project and event management experience.
  • Experience working in Student Services.
  • Applicable experiences in working with and/or advocating on behalf of women, international, first-generation students, students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, and/or marginalized student communities.

Description

Program Coordination and Advising
  • Co-Advise one of the OPAL identified affinity groups such as: International Student Advising, Women and Gender Advising, Latinx/Caribbean Student Advising, Black & Pan African Student Advising, Pan Asian Student Advising, or LGBTQIA+ Student Advising.
  • Guide students through outcomes and decision-making processes, room-booking, budgeting, and facilitating student, faculty, staff, and community partnerships.
  • Build rapport, learn, and maintain an ongoing understanding of the respective affinity community.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation, marketing, delivery, and assessment of affinity community-building programs, leadership workshops, affinity group graduation celebrations, orientation, and mentorship programs.
  • Recruit, retain, and encourage student involvement, facilitate group discussions, and arrange guest speakers and performers connected to the OPAL social justice mission.
  • Respect the sensitivity of students' disabilities, health concerns, socioeconomic status, immigration status, citizenship status, and refer students to the appropriate offices.

Leadership Development
  • After evaluating the growth, development, and engagement opportunities of their respective affinity community, leads the following training and programs:
    • Develops and conducts leadership development trainings for student leaders, mentors, and committee participants, using a social justice lens.
    • Develop, implement, and assess strategies for creating more collaborative, intersectional, and coherent processes for OPAL programs and events.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate undergraduate student staff.

Outreach and Education
  • Using the continuous knowledge of their respective affinity community, create, and lead the following outreach and education efforts:
    • Create electronic and print resources, outreach, and marketing materials. This may include updating website materials and using social networking platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, etc.
    • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of OPAL, connect and refer students to appropriate campus resources.

Other Duties
  • Collaborate and support OPAL-wide programs and leadership initiatives across the OPAL affinity communities.
  • Attend professional training programs and remain up to date on issues and strategies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Represent OPAL and Dartmouth College at appropriate conferences and meetings.
  • Work with Assistant Director on special projects.
