Manager, Communications & Content
Compensation: Starting salary range of $86,000 -$97,000. Salary range is based on D.C./DMV area. Compensation will be adjusted for other geographic locations.
Position Summary
The Manager, Communications and Content, is a flexible and self-motivated communications generalist - a strong writer and editor, project manager, and storyteller who deftly produces content across multiple channels. The manager collaborates across the organization and must be able to juggle multiple streams of work, from long-term projects to quick-turnaround tasks to seize opportunities.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the Council's efforts to gather and catalog member stories, from researching and interviewing prospects to writing up examples for use across the Communications and Content Team's work.
- Write and edit a wide range of externally facing communications materials that advance the Council's strategic aims, including but not limited to opinion pieces, talking points, website and social media content, press releases, and blog posts.
- Assist with other communications functions, including media relations and the preparation of briefing materials for executives, etc.
- Work with internal subject matter experts to develop new Council products - including but not limited to research-based publications, one-pagers, toolkits, online resource hubs - from concept and design to production and distribution.
- Contribute to the creation and marketing of the Grantmaker Salary and Benefits Survey and Report.
- Work with teammates to assess existing publications and related web content for timeliness and accuracy, make updates as needed, and maintain related records in Salesforce.
- Collaborate with Communications and Content teammates to develop comprehensive promotional plans for upcoming products.
- Collaborate with external vendors such as graphic designers, authors, and copy editors.
- As needed, perform basic design functions such as laying out reports or creating graphics for external channels.
- Contribute to overarching organization goals by participating in cross-functional working groups.
- Bachelor's degree or related combination of experience and education.
- 5 years' experience in communications, journalism, or content development.
General Skills and Competencies
- Experience managing content and resource development, philanthropic sector preferred
- Excellent storytelling, writing and editing skills, including experience writing for publications, editorial and social media.
- An eye for design and proficiency with Canva and/or Adobe Suite.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to listen well, and positively represent the organization and its mission.
- Ability to manage external vendors and provide clear, concise guidance.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to identify and solve problems efficiently and quickly.
- Ability to manage many and/or differing tasks and maintain productivity.
- Ability to work effectively and positively both independently and on a team with a range of working styles, and with people at all organization levels including staff, board members, foundation officers, donors, and vendors.
- Experience supervising and coaching junior and mid-level staff; and overseeing vendors.
- Experience or ability to use CRM database solutions, preferably Salesforce.
- Knowledge of content management systems and other technologies to manage and operate web sites.
- Proficient skill in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
