Job Summary
The incumbent develops, plans, organizes and directs the upkeep and maintenance of university grounds. He/she monitors and maintains the beauty and safety of the exterior environment of the campus by providing supervisory skills and horticultural expertise, including landscape maintenance and improvements.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Extensive technical knowledge and understanding of grounds management and horticultural practices
Knowledge and application of pertinent laws, codes, policies and/or regulations related to grounds maintenance
Knowledge of proper chemical usage
Good communication skills, verbal, written, and interpersonal
Good organizational skills
Ability to design and work from architectural plans, drawings and operational and maintenance manuals common to trade
Ability to operate hand tool, testing instruments and vehicles common to the trade
Ability to safely work with chemicals common to the trade
Ability to perform effectively under pressure, both due to client contact and internal departmental capacity
Ability to work well with others
Essential Job Functions
Two (2) years' experience in landscape maintenance
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver's license

Essential Job Functions
- Directs the operational and personnel activities of the grounds department, responsible for all phases of grounds maintenance
- Designs, plans and coordinates landscape improvements using information on available plant material, available level of maintenance and the landscape master plan
- Plans, schedules, coordinates and supervises the repair of roads, parking lots, walks, storm drains and other landscape fixtures
- Supervises maintenance of equipment common to the trade
- Performs or oversees schedule maintenance activities, to include the support of special events, projects, conferences, planned utility outages, and activities sponsored by individuals or groups leasing parts of the campus
- Directs the work of groundskeepers, equipment operators, and other personnel necessary to maintain campus grounds and athletic fields
- Designs and supervises installation of lawn irrigation systems
Two (2) years' experience in landscape maintenance
